Editorial: A Halted Expectation, A Renewed Responsibility — Why Has the Conservative Bloc Failed to Unite?

The author previously projected, in last year’s editorial, the possibility of the release of former President Yoon Suk-yeol. Considering the international climate at the time—particularly political signals emerging from the United States—this was not an unreasonable expectation.

In particular, the messaging from Donald Trump drew attention. Through various statements, he consistently raised concerns about the “weaponization of the justice system” and politically motivated prosecutions. While not referring to any specific individual in Korea, such remarks inevitably resonated with the situation surrounding former President Yoon. His emphasis on guarding against political retaliation formed a broader context that could not be ignored.

And yet, the anticipated turning point never materialized.
The reason lies not abroad—but at home.

■ A Missed Opportunity: Conservatives Failed to Act

The most critical failure rests with the opposition.
In particular, People Power Party failed to demonstrate clear direction and decisive action.

Politics is, above all, about timing.
At a moment when international sentiment and domestic awareness were aligning, hesitation and internal division prevailed.

The issue surrounding former President Yoon is not merely a personal legal matter. It touches upon:

  • The boundary between politics and the judiciary
  • The risk of retaliatory justice following a change in power
  • The foundational principles of liberal democracy

Yet, instead of confronting these questions head-on, the party treated the matter as a political liability—an approach that diverged sharply from the expectations of its supporters.

■ A Divided Conservatism Cannot Change Anything

Now, the focus must shift forward.
The upcoming June 3 local elections are not just about regional governance.

They represent a critical test of whether conservatives can:
👉 Reunify their base
👉 Reclaim political initiative
👉 Reignite core issues, including the question surrounding former President Yoon

The reality, however, is stark.
A fragmented conservative bloc cannot achieve meaningful political outcomes.

■ The People Power Party Must Now Decide

People Power Party can no longer afford ambiguity.

What is required now is:

  • A clear stance
  • A consistent message
  • Concrete action

Regarding the issue of former President Yoon, the party must openly address:
✔ Whether this is fundamentally a political matter
✔ Whether sufficient judicial legitimacy exists
✔ Whether a broader national reassessment is necessary

Silence is not neutrality.
Silence is a choice.

■ Without Unity, There Is No Expectation

Beyond the fate of former President Yoon, a more fundamental question remains:

👉 Does the conservative bloc possess the will to defend itself?

Political opportunities do not come twice.
Once a moment is lost, it may never return.

What is needed now is:

  • Unity over division
  • Resolve over calculation
  • Action over passivity

The upcoming local elections are more than just a vote.
They may well be the last testing ground for the revival of conservatism.

In the end, the conclusion is clear:
A conservative movement that fails to unite cannot expect anything in return.
