The Republic of Korea is a nation founded upon the constitutional values of liberal democracy and a market economic order. However, the current governance of the Lee Jae-myung administration raises deep questions about whether this country can still be called a democratic state. The unprincipled restrictions and pressure imposed on private corporations, including global chains like Starbucks, alongside attempts to control SNS platforms by threatening to shut down specific online communities (such as Ilbe) simply because they voice criticism against the regime, represent an extra-legal abuse of power unseen in normal democracies. This is a blatant act of suppression aimed at crushing market autonomy and silencing the public through dictatorial impulses.
This reckless approach is by no means an anomaly. Looking back at the trajectory of President Lee Jae-myung’s past, it becomes clear that these heavy-handed actions are a direct extension of a typical "gangster-style conduct" that has been deeply ingrained since his days as the Mayor of Seongnam. The persistent allegations regarding his ties to specific organized crime syndicates during his tenure in local government serve as proof that his method of wielding power has long deviated from that of a standard administrator. His aggressive style of achieving goals by any means necessary, coupled with a tendency to ruthlessly suppress anyone who opposes him, has ultimately led to the privatization and weaponization of the state’s administrative systems.
What is even more alarming is the fundamental flaw in the leader’s morality and inherent character. The past verbal abuse and atrocious behavior directed at his own biological brother and sister-in-law—acts too disgraceful to even mention—vividly expose a violent and heartless side of his human character. A leader's demeanor toward family and their fundamental view of human dignity inevitably project onto their philosophy of state governance. When a character that was cruel even to immediate family members is combined with state power, it is painfully obvious where the blade will point next. The current state of affairs, characterized by the intimidation of private enterprises and the ruthless violation of the opposition's freedom of expression, stands as undeniable evidence of this reality.
Politics is not the domain of gangsters who rule through raw force and intimidation. The most sacred duty bestowed upon a president is to defend the rule of law and guarantee the freedom of the citizens. We can no longer entrust the future of the Republic of Korea and the safety of its people to a leader who compromises constitutional values for personal vendettas and factional interests.
The administration must not forget the historical truth that arrogant power is bound to face the stern judgment of public sentiment. The Lee Jae-myung government must immediately halt its unjust intervention in the market economy, cease its censorship of press and expression, and put an end to its violent self-righteousness. The public will no longer tolerate gangster-style tyranny that dismantles the very systems of the state.
