[이천석의 사설] 이재명 대통령, ‘소년공’ 대 ‘소년원’ 의혹에 답하라… 당사자가 직접 진실 밝혀야 국민적 불신 해소된다

정치 지도자에게 있어 도덕성과 과거 행적의 투명성은 공직을 수행하기 위한 가장 기본적인 자격 요건이다. 하물며 국가의 최고 권력자이자 행정부 수반인 대통령이라면 자신을 둘러싼 그 어떤 작은 의혹에 대해서도 국민 앞에 한 점 부끄러움 없이 소상히 밝힐 의무가 있다. 그러나 취임 이후인 현재까지도 이재명 대통령의 어린 시절을 둘러싼 ‘소년공’과 ‘소년원’이라는 상반된 프레임은 우리 사회에서 끊이지 않는 논란의 불씨가 되고 있다.

이 대통령 측은 스스로를 지독한 가난 속에서 공장을 전전하며 장애를 얻은 ‘소년공’ 출신으로 설명해 왔다. 반면, 온라인과 유튜브 등지에서는 그가 어린 시절 모종의 중대 범죄나 폭행 사건에 연루되어 소년원 처분을 받았다는 의혹이 지속적으로 제기되어 왔다. 일각에서는 특정 사건과의 연루설이 사실무근인 거짓 정보로 판명되었다고 주장하지만, 이를 바라보는 대다수 국민의 시선에는 여전히 지워지지 않는 의문점이 남아 있는 것이 엄연한 현실이다.

문제는 이러한 의혹이 제기될 때마다 명확하고 객관적인 증거를 통해 의구심을 완전히 뿌리뽑지 못했다는 점이다. 해명에 대한 신뢰도가 낮아지면서 "그의 말은 믿기 어렵다"는 불신이 가라앉지 않고 있으며, 이는 결국 국정 동력의 약화는 물론 국가 정치 전반에 대한 낭비적인 소모전으로 이어지고 있다. 의혹이 허위사실이라면 이를 명백히 입증해 내는 것 또한 통치권자의 책임이다.

이제는 이 대통령 본인이 직접 나서야 할 때다. 더 이상 진영 논리 뒤에 숨거나 "정치적 공세"라는 한마디로 일축하며 구렁이 담 넘어가듯 대처해서는 국민적 의혹을 해소할 수 없다. 이 대통령은 자신의 어린 시절 히스토리를 명확히 공개함과 동시에, 소년원 수감설 등 범죄 의혹을 반박할 수 있는 객관적이고 공신력 있는 자료를 국민 앞에 당당히 제시해야 한다.

진실은 가린다고 가려지는 것이 아니며, 의혹을 방치하는 것은 국민에 대한 도리가 아니다. 이 대통령이 떳떳하다면 이번 기회에 모든 증명 자료를 투명하게 공개해 자신을 향한 범죄 의혹의 꼬리표를 스스로 떼어내기를 바란다. 그것이 국가 원수로서 국민에 대한 최소한의 예의이자, 대한민국 국민이 체감하는 불신의 정치를 끝내는 길이다.

For any political leader, integrity and transparency regarding their past actions are the most fundamental prerequisites for holding public office. This is even more critical for a president, who stands as the head of state and the chief executive of the nation; they bear an absolute duty to comprehensively and without a shred of shame clarify even the slightest suspicion before the public. Yet, even now, well into his presidency, the contrasting narratives surrounding President Lee Jae-myung’s youth—namely, the "factory boy" versus "juvenile detention" frameworks—continue to fuel persistent controversy within our society.

President Lee’s camp has consistently portrayed his early years as those of a "factory boy" who moved from one factory to another amidst grinding poverty, sustaining a physical disability in the process. Conversely, rumors have persistently circulated across online platforms and YouTube suggesting that he was involved in a serious violent crime or a fatal assault during his youth, resulting in a disposition to a juvenile detention center. While some argue that allegations tying him to a specific incident have already been debunked as misinformation, the stark reality remains that lingering doubts have not been entirely erased from the minds of the general public.

The core of the issue is that every time these allegations have resurfaced, the administration and the president have failed to completely uproot the suspicions using clear, objective evidence. As the credibility of past explanations has waned, the public sentiment that "his words are difficult to trust" has solidified. Ultimately, this unresolved distrust weakens the momentum of state affairs and drags the nation into a wasteful war of attrition over political narratives. Even if an allegation is entirely groundless, it remains the responsibility of the nation's chief executive to definitively prove its falsehood.

The time has come for President Lee to address this matter directly. He can no longer hide behind factional politics or dismiss the issue as mere "political offensive," brushing it aside without a proper accounting. Such an approach will never dissolve public skepticism. President Lee must transparently disclose the definitive history of his youth and proudly present objective, credible, and official records before the nation to unequivocally refute the allegations regarding a juvenile detention record.

The truth cannot be hidden forever, and leaving public suspicion unaddressed is a disservice to the citizens. If President Lee is beyond reproach, he should seize this opportunity to transparently release all verifying documentation and personally strip away the label of criminal suspicion that follows him. This is the minimum courtesy he owes to the citizens of this country as head of state, and it is the only path to ending the deep-seated politics of distrust currently felt by the people of South Korea.
