The prevailing market view that dismisses the recent sharp decline in the USD/KRW exchange rate as short-term volatility overlooks a massive structural paradigm shift occurring underneath the macroeconomy. The strong economic environment that supported the 1,200 KRW/USD level a decade ago is resurfacing. Explosive export growth, the monopolistic position of core Korean products, a strategic pivot toward domestic investment, and international pressure for Won appreciation all point toward the inevitability of the exchange rate settling into the 1,200 range.
Unlike past export expansions that relied heavily on volume, South Korea's key industries—including advanced semiconductors, AI components, defense, and shipbuilding—now hold critical, non-substitutable positions in global supply chains. As alternative suppliers are virtually non-existent, massive trade surpluses continue to accumulate, fueling a relentless structural inflow of US dollars into the domestic foreign exchange market.
As South Korean monopolistic products dominate international markets, major trading partners in the US and Europe face declining price competitiveness for their domestic industries. Echoing historical precedents such as the Plaza Accord, foreign powers are increasingly incentivized to exert pressure on South Korea to allow the Won to appreciate to its fair value, mitigating the currency advantage enjoyed by Korean exporters.
While massive outward foreign direct investment (FDI) and factory expansions in the US previously exerted downward pressure on the Won, global supply chain realignments and domestic strategic incentives are spurring a resurgence in domestic capital expenditure. As major corporations pivot back to investing at home, foreign capital drain is reversing, giving rise to robust domestic demand for the KRW.
The convergence of ▲explosive trade surpluses, ▲international pressure against Korean monopoly advantages, ▲domestic investment reshoring, and ▲decadal cycle alignment provides a powerful structural basis for breaking through lower support levels and entering the 1,200 KRW/USD range.
Government authorities and corporate leaders must move past the illusion of a permanently weak Won (1,300–1,400 KRW/USD) and proactively prepare for a 1,200 KRW era. This shift will allow South Korea to maximize the benefits of stabilized import prices and internal economic recovery while accelerating a transition toward high-value, tech-driven export competitiveness.
