[이천석의 사설] 미국의 경고, 이재명 정권은 직시해야 한다

미국이 현대자동차·LG에너지솔루션의 조지아 합작 공장에서 350명의 한국인 노동자를 체포했다는 소식은 충격적이다. 표면적으로는 법규 위반이나 행정 절차상의 문제로 포장되었을지 모르나, 그 이면에는 분명한 정치적 메시지가 숨어 있다. 이는 단순한 노동 문제를 넘어, 대한민국 정권을 향한 강력한 경고로 읽힌다. “이재명도 이렇게 될 수 있다”는 무언의 압박이자, 국제사회의 불신을 여실히 드러낸 사건이다.

이재명 정권은 집권 이후 반민주적 행태와 친중 노선으로 동맹국과의 갈등을 자초해 왔다. 사법부 장악, 언론 통제, 종교 길들이기, 교육 좌편향 등 일련의 조치는 자유민주주의를 지탱하는 기둥을 흔들어 놓았다. 미국을 비롯한 자유 진영은 이를 좌시하지 않고 있으며, 이번 사건은 동맹국이 더 이상 침묵하지 않겠다는 신호탄이다.

대한민국은 자유민주주의 국가이자 미국의 핵심 동맹이다. 그러나 현 정권이 보여주는 행태는 이 노선을 정면으로 배반하고 있다. 외교적 균형을 가장한 친중 편향은 결국 한미동맹의 신뢰를 무너뜨렸고, 이번 사태는 그 불신의 폭발로 나타난 것이다. 미국의 메시지는 분명하다. “민주주의와 동맹의 가치를 훼손한다면, 그 대가를 치르게 될 것”이라는 경고다.

이제 선택은 국민의 몫이다. 자유를 버리고 권력의 독주를 용인할 것인가, 아니면 민주주의를 지키기 위해 분연히 일어설 것인가. 역사는 침묵하는 국민에게 자유를 허락하지 않았다. 미국의 경고를 외면하는 순간, 대한민국은 국제사회에서 고립되고, 국민은 자유를 잃게 될 것이다.

이재명 정권은 더 이상 눈과 귀를 막아서는 안 된다. 민주주의를 훼손하고 동맹을 배반하는 길은 국가의 파멸로 이어진다. 지금이라도 국민 앞에, 국제사회 앞에 자유와 정의의 가치를 존중하겠다는 분명한 태도를 보여야 한다. 그것이 대한민국이 나아갈 길이며, 국민이 바라는 진정한 국가의 모습이다.

[Editorial] America’s Warning—The Lee Administration Must Face Reality

The recent arrest of 350 Korean workers at the Hyundai–LG Energy Solution joint venture plant in Georgia has sent shockwaves through Korea. On the surface, it may be explained as a matter of legal or administrative violations, but beneath the surface lies an unmistakable political message. This is not simply a labor dispute—it is a stern warning directed at the Korean government. It is an implicit signal: “Lee Jae-myung could be next.”

Since taking power, the Lee administration has courted conflict through anti-democratic behavior and a pro-China tilt. Moves to seize control of the judiciary, muzzle the press, tame religion, and push education into ideological indoctrination have undermined the very foundations of liberal democracy. The United States and other free nations have not turned a blind eye, and this incident is a clear sign that allies will remain silent no longer.

The Republic of Korea is a free democratic nation and a vital U.S. ally. Yet the current administration has betrayed this course. What it claims as “balance” in diplomacy is in reality a pro-China bias that has corroded trust in the U.S.–Korea alliance. The message from Washington is clear: “If you undermine democracy and the values of our alliance, you will pay the price.”

The choice now lies with the Korean people. Will they surrender their liberty and allow authoritarian overreach, or will they rise to defend democracy? History has never granted freedom to a silent people. To ignore America’s warning is to risk isolation abroad and the loss of liberty at home.

The Lee administration must no longer shut its eyes and ears. The path of dismantling democracy and betraying allies leads only to national ruin. Even now, it must stand before the people and the world with a clear commitment to uphold freedom and justice. That is the path Korea must take, and the true face of the nation the people deserve.
