[이천석의 사설] 권력의 칼날, 민주주의를 겨누다

최근 검찰이 자유와혁신당사 압수수색 시도에 이어 국민의힘 당사에 대해서도 연이어 압수수색을 시도한 사건은 단순한 수사 절차의 문제가 아니다. 이는 민주주의의 근간을 크게 흔드는 권력 남용이며, 정당 활동의 자유와 국민 기본권에 대한 심각한 침해라 할 수 있다.

압수수색의 명분은 더욱 황당하다. 통일교 신도가 국민의힘에 다수 입당했는지를 확인하겠다는 것이다. 이는 특정 종교나 개인의 정치적 선택의 자유를 본질적으로 제한하려는 위험한 발상이며, 자유민주주의 체제와 정면으로 배치된다. 헌법이 보장하는 ‘정치적 자유’와 ‘종교의 자유’를 공권력이 직접 유린하는 행위는 도저히 정당화될 수 없다.

더욱 심각한 문제는 민주당의 뻔뻔한 이중성이다. 민주당은 지금 국민의힘을 겨냥해 종교단체 연계를 문제 삼고 있지만, 정작 자신들은 전교조 출신이나 민노총 인사들을 당에 대거 끌어들여 왔다. 특정 집단의 조직적 입당을 문제 삼는다면, 민주당 스스로 먼저 성찰해야 한다. 남을 향한 비난은 쏟아내면서 자신들의 행태에는 면죄부를 주는 것은 전형적인 ‘내로남불’의 민낯이다.

정당은 국민 누구에게나 열려 있어야 한다. 직업, 사상, 종교를 불문하고 대한민국 국민이라면 자유롭게 정치적 의사표현을 할 수 있는 것이 민주주의다. 그런데 현 정권은 정치적 반대 세력을 억압하기 위해 헌법적 가치를 도외시하고 권력기관을 동원하고 있다. 이는 ‘정치 보복’ 그 이상도, 그 이하도 아니다.

민주주의는 절차적 정의와 공정한 경쟁 속에서 꽃피운다. 그러나 지금 대한민국은 권력이 수사기관을 앞세워 야당을 압박하는 참담한 현실에 직면해 있다. 국민은 더 이상 이러한 억압적 권력 행사를 좌시해서는 안 된다. 민주주의를 지키는 길은 권력 남용을 단호히 거부하고, 헌법적 가치를 수호하려는 국민적 연대에 달려 있다.

Editorial: A Knife of Power Aimed at Democracy

The recent attempt to raid the People Power Party headquarters, following the earlier raid on the Freedom and Innovation Party office, is nothing short of a blatant abuse of power that gravely undermines the foundation of democracy. The justification is utterly unconvincing. Investigating whether members of the Unification Church joined the party en masse is not only a severe violation of individual freedom but also a textbook example of double standards.

One must ask the Democratic Party whether it has not, in turn, recruited members of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers’ Union (KTU) or the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU). If such group-based affiliations are to be condemned, then the Democratic Party itself should first look in the mirror. What it demands of others while excusing itself is the very embodiment of hypocrisy.

Political parties must remain open to all citizens, regardless of profession, beliefs, or religion. Yet the ruling forces, by weaponizing state institutions to suppress political rivals, are trampling on constitutional freedoms. This is nothing less than political retaliation.

Democracy thrives on procedural justice and fair competition. Today, however, Korea faces a grim reality: power wielded as a weapon, aimed squarely at silencing the opposition. The people cannot and must not tolerate such oppression. To defend democracy, citizens must stand together against power abuse and uphold the constitutional values that protect us all.
