[이천석의 사설] 국방산업의 경제대국 기회를 말라죽게 한 정권, 국가의 운명을 걸고 바로잡아야 한다

세계는 지금 신냉전의 소용돌이 속에 있다. 우크라이나 전쟁, 중동 분쟁, 중국과 대만의 긴장 고조는 각국으로 하여금 군비 확장에 몰두하게 만들었다. 그 결과 미국을 비롯한 서방 진영의 국방산업은 눈부신 성장을 이어가며, 자국의 경제와 안보를 동시에 강화하는 일석이조의 효과를 거두고 있다.

지난 정부 시절, 한국 또한 이 흐름에 발맞추어 국방산업의 황금기를 맞이했다. 첨단 무기 수출이 늘어나고, K-방산은 세계 시장에서 각광을 받았다. 그 성과는 단순히 방산기업의 호황에 그치지 않고 국가경제 전반에 활력을 불어넣었다. 국민소득 5만 달러 시대를 향한 희망이 그 어느 때보다 가까이 다가와 있었다.

그러나 이 모든 것은 이재명 정권 출범과 함께 무너졌다. 부정 선거 의혹 속에 들어선 정권은 국방을 정치적 거래의 도구로 삼고, 서방과의 전략적 연대보다는 편향된 이념과 외교적 무능에 매달리고 있다. 그 결과 한국은 국방산업의 기회를 잃고, 국가경제는 추락하며, 국민은 절체절명의 위기 속에 내던져졌다. 이대로 간다면 대한민국은 선진국 문턱에서 남미형 중진국으로 곤두박질칠 수밖에 없다.

안보와 경제는 분리될 수 없다. 강력한 국방력은 수출 경쟁력을 뒷받침하고, 건전한 동맹은 투자와 무역의 활로를 넓힌다. 이를 무시하고 정권의 안위를 위해 동맹을 흔드는 행위는 곧 국가의 미래를 담보로 잡히는 것이다. 대한민국의 운명은 더 이상 정권의 장난감이 될 수 없다.

이제 국민이 나서야 한다. 이재명 정권을 단호히 끌어내리고, 미국과의 굳건한 동맹을 비롯한 서방 세계와의 연대를 복원해야 한다. 국방산업을 다시 살리고, 국가경제를 회생시키며, 대한민국을 세계강국의 반열에 올려놓아야 한다. 그것이야말로 오늘의 위기를 극복하고 내일의 번영을 보장하는 유일한 길이다.

역사는 우리에게 기회를 다시 주지 않는다. 주권자인 국민이 침묵한다면, 한국은 돌이킬 수 없는 길로 들어설 것이다. 오늘 우리가 내리는 선택이 대한민국의 미래를 결정한다. 지금이야말로 국가를 바로 세울 마지막 순간이다.

[C.S.Lee's Editorial] A Regime That Let the Defense Industry Wither Must Be Corrected to Save the Nation

The world is engulfed in a new Cold War. The war in Ukraine, conflicts in the Middle East, and rising tensions between China and Taiwan have driven nations into an unprecedented arms race. As a result, the defense industries of the United States and its Western allies are expanding rapidly, simultaneously strengthening both their economies and national security.

During the previous administration, Korea too entered this global wave, experiencing a golden age in its defense sector. Exports of advanced weaponry surged, and K-defense emerged as a rising star in the global market. This boom was not confined to defense companies alone but invigorated the entire economy. The dream of achieving $50,000 in per capita income seemed within reach.

All of this progress, however, collapsed under the current Lee Jae-myung administration. Elected under allegations of fraud, this regime has reduced national defense to a political bargaining chip, neglecting strategic alliances with the West in favor of ideological bias and diplomatic incompetence. As a result, Korea has lost its competitive edge in the defense market, the economy is sinking, and the people are trapped in a grave crisis. If this continues, the nation will plunge from the brink of developed-country status into that of a mid-tier Latin American state.

Security and economy cannot be separated. Strong defense power underpins export competitiveness, and robust alliances open pathways for trade and investment. To ignore this reality and manipulate alliances for the regime’s survival is to gamble with the nation’s destiny. Korea’s fate cannot be treated as a political toy.

The people must rise. This administration must be removed decisively, and the nation’s alliance with the United States and the broader Western world restored. Only then can the defense industry be revived, the economy revitalized, and Korea elevated into the ranks of global powers. This is not merely an option—it is the only way to overcome today’s crisis and secure tomorrow’s prosperity.

History does not grant second chances. If the sovereign people remain silent, Korea will be driven onto an irreversible path. The choice we make today will decide the future of our nation. Now is the last moment to set the Republic straight.
