[이천석의 사설] 침묵하는 지도자, 도덕성의 무게를 외면하다

정치인의 도덕성은 단순한 사생활의 문제가 아니다. 그것은 국민이 부여한 공적 신뢰의 근간이며, 지도자가 권력을 행사할 수 있는 정당성의 최소 조건이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 오늘날 우리 정치권에서는 각종 논란과 의혹이 제기되어도, 명확한 해명 없이 침묵과 회피로 일관하는 풍토가 만연해 있다. 그 연장선 상에 이재명과 김현지가 있다.

의혹은 언제나 불완전한 정보에서 시작된다. 그러나 그 불완전함을 바로잡는 것은 당사자의 책임 있는 설명이다. 해명을 미루고, 사실 확인을 외면하며, ‘정치공작’이라는 프레임으로 덮어버리는 순간, 그 지도자는 이미 국민 앞에서 신뢰를 잃는다. 침묵은 해명이 아니다. 침묵은 인정과 같다.

지도자의 위치는 사생활 보호보다 공적 투명성의 의무가 더 크다. 국민의 삶에 중대한 영향을 미치는 결정을 내리는 자리에 있는 이상, 그 삶 또한 국민의 신뢰 속에서 검증받아야 한다. 책임 있는 공직자라면 논란이 제기되는 즉시, 공개적으로 해명하고 검증받는 것이 도리다. 그것이 진정한 리더십이다. 이재명은 범죄자임에도 불구하고 대통령이라는 최고직까지 올라가 있다. 이와 더불어 내연녀라는 의혹을 받고 있는 김현지 또한 막강한 고위 공직에까지 이른 사실은 세계사적으로도 드문 일이다.

국민은 완벽한 사람을 원하지 않는다. 다만 진실을 숨기지 않는 지도자를 원한다. 해명 없이 버티는 지도자는 결국 국민의 신뢰를 스스로 무너뜨리는 것이다. 도덕성 논란이 반복되는 정치권의 병폐를 끊기 위해서는, 모든 정치 지도자가 자신을 둘러싼 의혹에 대해 투명하게 해명하고 국민 앞에 책임지는 자세를 보여야 한다. 그렇지 않다면, 역사는 그들의 침묵을 도덕적 실패로 기록할 것이다. 따라서, 이재명과 김현지도 이에 대한 명확한 답을 내놓아야 할 것이다. 그렇지 않을 경우 세계사의 조롱거리로 남을 것이다.

The moral integrity of political leaders is not a matter of private life alone. It forms the foundation of public trust granted by the people and represents the minimum legitimacy required to exercise power. Yet in today’s political landscape, many leaders continue to respond to growing scandals and allegations with silence and evasion, deepening public cynicism.

Suspicions always begin from incomplete information. However, it is the responsibility of those involved to clarify the facts and dispel uncertainty. When leaders delay explanations, dismiss concerns as “political manipulation,” or avoid accountability, they forfeit the trust of the citizens they serve. Silence is not an explanation—it is an admission.

Those who hold public office bear a duty of transparency that outweighs the privilege of privacy. Anyone whose decisions affect the lives of millions must be ready to open their actions and choices to public scrutiny. Responsible leadership demands timely, honest, and verifiable clarification whenever controversy arises. That is the essence of genuine accountability.

Citizens do not expect perfection; they expect honesty. A leader who conceals the truth ultimately destroys the very foundation of trust. To restore integrity in public life, every political figure must be willing to confront allegations openly and respond with clear, factual answers. Otherwise, history will remember their silence not as restraint, but as a moral failure.
