[이천석의 사설] 국가를 판 외교 — 국민의 희생 위에 서 있는 이재명 정권의 위험한 선택

윤석열의 석방보다 3,500억 달러의 대미 투자를 택한 정부, 외환위기의 불씨를 스스로 키우다

2025년 10월의 끝자락, 국민의 기대는 또다시 무너졌다.
윤석열 전 대통령의 석방은 이뤄지지 않았고, 자유와 정의의 회복은 끝내 미뤄졌다.
많은 국민이 APEC 정상회의를 계기로 미국 트럼프 대통령의 외교적 결단을 기대했으나,
그 기회마저 이재명 정부의 정치적 계산 속에 희생되고 말았다.

이번 관세 협상은 단순한 경제 협의가 아니었다.
트럼프 대통령이 대한민국에 던진 선택지는 분명했다 —
“윤석열의 석방이냐, 아니면 3,500억 달러의 대미 투자냐.”
그러나 이재명 정부는 후자를 택했고, 그 대가로 국가는 심각한 외환 불안과 산업 침체의 위기를 자초했다.

국가 재정의 여력이 한계에 달한 상황에서,
대미 투자 3,500억 달러에 더해 농산물 시장 전면 개방과
6,000억 달러 규모의 추가 투자 약속까지 내주었다는 소식은 충격을 넘어 절망적이다.
이는 국익을 외교의 거래 대상으로 내던진 처사이며,
국민의 세금을 담보로 정치적 생존을 꾀한 역사적 실패로 기록될 것이다.

자유무역은 생존의 문제다.
그러나 그 자유는 공정한 협상과 국익의 균형 위에서만 의미가 있다.
지금의 협상 결과는 공정과는 거리가 멀다.
외국 농산물이 무차별적으로 들어오면 국내 농업은 무너지고,
중소기업은 경쟁력을 잃으며,
국민은 물가 폭등과 환율 불안이라는 이중고에 시달릴 것이다.

이재명 정부는 경제를 살린다며 국민에게 “희생”을 요구하고 있다.
그러나 정작 희생은 국민이,
이익은 정치권이 가져가는 구조가 되었다.
경제는 이미 비틀거리고 있고, 외환보유액은 빠르게 줄고 있다.
이대로라면 1997년 외환위기의 악몽이 다시 고개를 들 것이다.

국가의 외교는 국민의 자존과 생명을 지키기 위한 도구이지,
정권 유지를 위한 거래 수단이 되어서는 안 된다.

국민은 묻고 있다 —
이 정권은 과연 누구를 위해 협상하고, 누구를 위해 희생을 강요하는가?
경제를 살린다며 국익을 팔아넘기고,
민주주의를 외치며 자유를 억압하는 이 모순된 현실을 언제까지 참아야 하는가.

이재명 정부는 이제 책임을 져야 한다.
국익을 저버린 외교, 국민의 희생 위에 세운 거래,
그리고 정의를 저버린 정치 보복 —
그 모든 것의 끝은 결국 국민의 심판일 것이다.

Choosing a $350 Billion U.S. Investment over Yoon Suk-yeol’s Release: A Spark for a New Currency Crisis

As October 2025 draws to a close, public hope has once again collapsed.
The release of former President Yoon Suk-yeol has not materialized, and the restoration of liberty and justice has been postponed yet again.
Many Koreans had expected a decisive diplomatic breakthrough from U.S. President Donald Trump during the APEC Summit,
but that opportunity was ultimately lost to the Lee Jae-myung administration’s political calculus.

The recent tariff negotiations were not merely an economic discussion.
President Trump’s proposition to Seoul was unmistakable —
“Yoon Suk-yeol’s release, or a $350 billion investment in the United States.”
Lee Jae-myung’s government chose the latter, and in doing so has invited a wave of financial instability and industrial decline.

At a time when national fiscal capacity is nearing its limit,
the government’s pledge of $350 billion in U.S. investment, along with full market opening for agricultural imports and an additional $600 billion in commitments,
is nothing short of catastrophic.
It represents a betrayal of the national interest,
a political bargain struck at the expense of the taxpayer,
and a failure that will be remembered in history.

Free trade is not a luxury — it is survival itself.
Yet that freedom has meaning only when grounded in fairness and the balance of national interest.
The current agreement is far from fair.
Unrestricted inflows of foreign agricultural goods will devastate domestic farming,
erode small-business competitiveness,
and subject citizens to spiraling prices and currency volatility.

The Lee administration demands “sacrifice” from the people in the name of economic recovery.
But in truth, it is the people who bear the cost while politicians reap the gain.
The economy is already faltering, and foreign reserves are rapidly depleting.
At this rate, the specter of the 1997 financial crisis may return.

Diplomacy exists to protect the nation’s dignity and the lives of its people —
not to serve as a bargaining chip for political survival.

The people are asking:
For whom does this administration negotiate?
For whom does it demand sacrifice?
It claims to save the economy while selling off the national interest,
and to defend democracy while suppressing freedom.
How long must this contradiction continue?

The Lee Jae-myung government must now be held accountable.
Its diplomacy that undermined national interests,
its bargains built on the people’s sacrifice,
and its political vengeance disguised as justice —
all will ultimately face the judgment of the people.
