[이천석의 사설] 점잖은 보수는 먹잇감이 된다 — 가면을 벗은 ‘진보’의 실체를 직시하라

대한민국의 이른바 진보세력은 더 이상 진보가 아니다.
그들은 ‘진보’라는 허울뿐인 가면을 쓴 폭력적 전체주의 세력으로 변질되었다. 다양성과 관용을 말하면서, 자신들과 다른 의견에는 배제와 낙인을 앞세운다. 자유를 외치면서, 표현의 자유는 선택적으로 허용한다. 이것이 과연 진보인가, 아니면 권력화된 이념 집단인가.

■ 온유한 보수, 반복되는 패턴의 희생자

대한민국 보수 지향 국민 다수는 질서와 법치, 공동체의 안정이라는 가치를 중시한다. 그 결과 극단적 언행과 폭력적 압박 앞에서도 “과하면 돌아오겠지”라는 체념을 선택해 왔다. 그러나 현실은 냉혹했다. 침묵은 존중이 아니라 표적이 되었고, 절제는 미덕이 아니라 약점으로 소비되었다.

점잖음은 상대가 같은 규칙을 지킬 때만 미덕이다. 규칙을 파괴하는 세력 앞에서 점잖음은 방패가 되지 못한다.

■ 침소봉대와 집단 압박, 전체주의의 전형

이른바 진보 진영은 사소한 사건에도 침소봉대하여 여론을 장악하고, 집단적 압박으로 공론장을 왜곡한다. 사실과 맥락보다 분노의 동원이 우선이며, 토론보다 낙인과 배제가 앞선다. 이 과정에서 폭력적 언행은 ‘정당한 분노’로 미화되고, 반대 의견은 ‘적대’로 규정된다.

이는 민주주의가 아니라 전체주의의 전형적 작동 방식이다. 다수의 침묵을 강요하고, 소수의 목소리를 봉쇄하며, 사회를 하나의 이념으로 획일화한다.

■ 보수의 침묵은 민주주의를 지키지 못했다

보수는 오래도록 “품격”을 강조해 왔다. 그러나 상대가 품격을 전략으로 사용하지 않을 때, 품격은 스스로를 묶는 족쇄가 된다. 민주주의는 조용한 선의만으로 유지되지 않는다. 자유는 주장될 때만 살아남고, 법치는 요구될 때만 작동한다.

보수가 침묵하는 동안 공론장은 기울었고, 정의는 선택적으로 적용되었으며, 사회는 이념의 소유물처럼 운영되었다.

■ 이제는 분명히 대응해야 한다

보수는 더 이상 방어적 태도에 머물러서는 안 된다. 자신의 가치와 신념을 분명하고 강력하게 표출해야 한다. 이는 폭력을 뜻하지 않는다. 이는 주저 없는 발언, 조직된 시민 행동, 명확한 가치 선언을 뜻한다. 사회 개조에 대한 대응은 선택이 아니라 생존의 문제다.

■ 대중문화와 선동의 구조를 직시하라

역사는 분명하다. 전체주의와 공산 세력은 언제나 대중문화와 유명 인사를 선전 도구로 활용해 왔다. 감정에 호소해 사고를 단순화하고, 비판을 비도덕으로 낙인찍는 가장 손쉬운 수단이기 때문이다. 문제는 개인이 아니라, 그들을 통해 여론을 동원하는 구조다.

■ 결론: 침묵을 끝내지 않으면, 모든 것을 잃는다

점잖음은 덕목이지만, 투쟁을 포기한 점잖음은 방조다.
보수가 다시 말하지 않는다면, 자유는 말해줄 사람이 없다.
보수가 다시 나서지 않는다면, 민주주의는 구호로만 남는다.

이제는 분명히 말해야 한다.
‘진보’라는 가면 뒤에 숨은 폭력적 전체주의를 거부해야 한다.
그리고 침묵은 중립이 아니라 패배임을 선언해야 한다.

보수가 다시 목소리를 높일 때, 이 땅의 민주주의와 정의도 비로소 숨을 쉴 수 있다.

In South Korea today, what calls itself “progressive” is no longer progressive in any meaningful sense. It has become a violent totalitarian force wearing the hollow mask of progressivism. It speaks the language of tolerance while practicing exclusion. It invokes democracy while suppressing dissent. It claims moral superiority while relying on intimidation and mob pressure.

This contradiction is not accidental. It is structural.

■ The Tragedy of a Gentle Conservatism

Most conservative-minded citizens in South Korea value order, legality, and social stability. They tend to be patient, restrained, and reluctant to escalate conflict. In the face of extremism, they often choose silence, believing that excess will eventually correct itself.

That belief has proven disastrously wrong.

Silence has not earned respect. It has invited aggression.
Restraint has not preserved balance. It has created vulnerability.

A society in which one side shouts and the other whispers does not remain neutral. It tilts.

■ From “Progress” to Coercion

The so-called progressive camp reacts to even minor incidents with exaggerated outrage, weaponizing emotion to dominate public discourse. Facts and context are secondary to noise and speed. Those who disagree are not debated—they are labeled, isolated, and morally condemned.

This is not pluralism.
This is the operational logic of totalitarianism.

When violence is excused as “righteous anger,”
when intimidation is reframed as “social justice,”
and when dissent is treated as heresy,
democracy is already in retreat.

■ Conservative Silence Has Not Protected Democracy

For too long, conservatives have insisted on “decency” and “dignity” as political strategies. But dignity cannot function as a shield when the opposing side rejects the rules entirely.

Democracy does not survive on good intentions alone.
Freedom exists only when it is actively asserted.

While conservatives remained quiet, the public square was captured. Legal principles were selectively applied. Justice became ideological property rather than a universal standard.

■ It Is Time to Respond — Clearly and Forcefully

This is not a call for violence.
It is a call for clarity, courage, and organized civic resistance.

Conservatives must articulate their values without apology. They must engage assertively in media, culture, education, and public debate. Defensive silence is no longer a moral high ground—it is abdication.

Responding to attempts at radical social engineering is no longer optional. It is a matter of democratic survival.

■ Celebrity Culture as a Tool of Manipulation

History is unambiguous. Totalitarian and communist movements have always exploited popular culture and celebrities to manufacture consent. Emotional appeal replaces rational thought. Critics are portrayed as heartless or immoral. Complexity is flattened into slogans.

The issue is not individual entertainers.
The issue is a system that weaponizes fame to manipulate public emotion.

■ Conclusion: Silence Is Not Neutrality — It Is Defeat

Gentleness is a virtue.
But gentleness that refuses to confront coercion becomes complicity.

If conservatives do not speak, liberty will have no defenders.
If they do not act, democracy will be reduced to a hollow ritual.

It is time to say this plainly:

A movement that enforces conformity through intimidation is not progressive.
It is totalitarian—no matter what mask it wears.

And it is time to recognize the final truth:

Silence is not neutrality. Silence is defeat.

Only when conservatives reclaim their voice can democracy and justice hope to endure.
