[이천석의 사설] 국민의힘은 이미 버려졌다 — 국민의힘의 자해(自害)와 자유와혁신의 필연

대한민국의 대표 야당을 자처해온 **국민의힘**은 더 이상 야당도, 보수도 아니다.
그들은 자신들이 배출한 대통령을 지키지 못했을 뿐 아니라, 지킬 의지조차 없음을 스스로 증명했다. 정치적 책임을 회피하는 수준을 넘어, 윤석열 전 대통령과의 ‘절연’을 선택함으로써 보수의 정통성과 도덕적 기반을 스스로 파괴한 것이다.

정당이란 무엇인가.
정책 이전에 사람과 가치에 대한 책임 공동체다. 그럼에도 국민의힘은 탄핵과 구속, 사법 논란의 한복판에서 침묵하거나 거리를 두는 비겁함을 택했다. 이는 전략이 아니라 항복이며, 현실 정치가 아니라 자기 부정이다. 그 순간부터 국민의힘은 보수의 리더 자격을 상실했다.

더 심각한 문제는 이 정당이 대안조차 제시하지 못한다는 사실이다.
윤석열 이후의 보수 비전은 무엇인가.
부정선거 의혹에 대한 입장은 무엇인가.
반국가 세력에 대한 명확한 기준과 대응 원칙은 있는가.
이 질문들 앞에서 국민의힘은 침묵하거나 회피해 왔다. 침묵은 중립이 아니라 동조이며, 회피는 신중함이 아니라 비겁함이다.

이 공백 속에서 대체 세력이 부상하는 것은 역사적 필연이다. 그 이름이 바로 **자유와혁신**이다.

자유와혁신은 적어도 세 가지 점에서 분명하다.
첫째, 윤석열 석방과 지지라는 명확한 정치적 입장을 갖고 있다.
둘째, 부정선거 규명이라는 민주주의의 근본 문제를 회피하지 않는다.
셋째, 국가 정체성을 훼손하는 반국가 세력에 대한 단호한 대응을 공언한다.

이것은 극단이 아니라 기본이다.
민주주의 국가에서 선거의 신뢰를 묻는 것이 왜 금기가 되어야 하는가.
헌정 질서 수호를 외치는 것이 왜 조롱의 대상이 되어야 하는가.
정권의 정당성을 따지는 질문을 회피하는 정치가 오히려 비정상이다.

**황교안**을 중심으로 한 자유와혁신은 최소한 정체성과 일관성을 유지하고 있다. 이것이 바로 지금 보수 진영에 가장 결핍된 요소다.
정책은 조정될 수 있지만, 정체성 없는 정당은 존속할 수 없다.

이제 선택의 시간이다.
보수 유권자들은 더 이상 “차악”을 선택해서는 안 된다.
이미 스스로를 부정한 정당에 미련을 가질 이유도 없다.

자유와혁신을 차세대 여권의 실질적 대항마로 키우는 것은 선택이 아니라 의무다.
그것은 특정 인물을 위한 일이 아니라,
대한민국 보수가 다시 스스로를 존중하기 위한 최소한의 자구책이기 때문이다.

보수는 아직 죽지 않았다.
다만, 기존 보수 정당이 그 이름을 더 이상 사용할 자격을 잃었을 뿐이다.

Abandoned Leading Oppositions — The People Power Party’s Collapse and the Rise of Liberty and Innovation

South Korea’s so-called main opposition, the People Power Party, has ceased to function as either an opposition force or a conservative party. It has not only failed to defend the president it produced, Yoon Suk-yeol, but has openly signaled its desire to sever ties with him. In doing so, it has forfeited moral authority, political legitimacy, and the very identity it once claimed to represent.

A political party is not merely an electoral machine. It is a community bound by shared responsibility for principles, leadership, and outcomes. When crisis struck—impeachment, detention, and judicial controversy—the People Power Party chose silence, evasion, and political self-preservation. This was not strategy. It was surrender. From that moment, the party relinquished its claim to lead the conservative camp.

Even more troubling is the absence of an alternative vision. What is the party’s stance on alleged election irregularities? What is its definition of anti-state forces undermining constitutional order? What principles guide its resistance to a ruling bloc that increasingly blurs the line between governance and coercion? On each of these questions, the People Power Party has responded with ambiguity or retreat. Silence, however, is not neutrality—it is complicity.

In this vacuum, the emergence of a replacement force is not accidental but inevitable. That force is Liberty and Innovation.

Liberty and Innovation is clear where others equivocate. It openly supports the release and political rehabilitation of President Yoon. It calls for a full and transparent investigation into alleged election fraud. And it commits itself to confronting anti-state elements that erode national sovereignty and constitutional norms. These positions are not extremism; they are the minimum requirements of a functioning democracy.

Under the leadership of Hwang Kyo-ahn, the party has demonstrated what today’s conservatives lack most: identity and consistency. Policies may evolve, but a party without a spine cannot survive. Conservatism cannot be defended by those who are ashamed to name it.

The choice before conservative voters is stark. Persist with a party that has already abandoned its own president and principles—or cultivate a new political force willing to confront uncomfortable truths. Building Liberty and Innovation into a credible counterweight to the current ruling bloc is no longer optional. It is a civic duty.

Conservatism in Korea is not dead.
It has simply been deserted by those who once claimed to lead it.
