[이천석의 사설] 보수 정당의 갈림길 — 지도부의 선택은 지지층의 신뢰를 얻고 있는가

오늘 발표된 지도부의 입장은 분명 하나의 전략적 선택이다. 헌법재판소의 결정과 사법부의 판단, 그리고 대선 결과를 정치 현실로 받아들이고 새로운 길을 모색하겠다는 메시지다. 그러나 과연 그 선택이 당의 핵심 지지층이 느끼는 정서와 부합하는지에 대해서는 의문이 제기된다.

정치는 단순히 제도적 결과를 수용하는 기술이 아니다. 그것은 지지자들이 왜 분노하고, 왜 의문을 제기하며, 왜 불신을 품고 있는지를 이해하는 과정이기도 하다. 지도부가 “이제는 인정하고 나아가자”는 현실론을 내세울 때, 일부 지지층은 오히려 “왜 충분히 싸우지 않았는가”라는 질문을 던지고 있다.

보수 정당의 위기는 패배 그 자체가 아니라, 패배 이후의 태도에서 비롯된다. 당이 지켜야 할 가치와 정체성이 무엇인지, 어디까지 타협하고 어디에서 선을 긋는지에 대한 명확한 메시지가 보이지 않는다면, 지지층의 이탈은 자연스러운 결과가 될 수밖에 없다.

정당은 선거 기구이기 이전에 가치 공동체다. 만약 당이 스스로의 정체성을 분명히 하지 못한 채 ‘전략적 거리두기’만을 반복한다면, 그 공백은 다른 세력이 채우게 된다. 정치에서 진공 상태는 존재하지 않는다.

또한 지방선거를 앞둔 시점에서 윤과의 절연이 과연 득이 될지 실이 될지는 냉정한 분석이 필요하다. 지지층 결집 없이 중도 확장을 시도하는 방식은 과거에도 성공과 실패가 엇갈렸다. 핵심 기반을 단단히 다지지 못한 채 외연 확장만을 추구할 경우, 오히려 양쪽 모두를 잃을 위험도 존재한다.

지금 필요한 것은 감정적 단절이 아니라, 명확한 비전 제시다. 무엇을 지키고 무엇을 바꿀 것인지에 대한 철학적 선언 없이 전략만 이야기하는 정치는 설득력을 얻기 어렵다.

보수 정치가 다시 힘을 얻기 위해서는 패배의 원인을 단순히 “결과”로만 정리할 것이 아니라, 왜 상당수 지지자들이 여전히 납득하지 못하고 있는지부터 진지하게 성찰해야 한다. 정치적 신뢰는 승리로만 쌓이지 않는다. 진정성 있는 설명과 일관된 태도에서 비롯된다.

정당의 미래는 지도부의 언어가 아니라, 그 언어가 지지자들의 마음과 얼마나 연결되어 있는가에 달려 있다.

지금 국민의힘이 나갈 길은 알량한 뱃지를 벗어 던지고 과감하게 거리에 나와 투쟁하는 것이다. 그리고 부정선거 해결없이는 6.3 지방선거는 들러리가 될 것이다.

The statement delivered today by the party leadership is clearly a strategic choice. It conveys a message that the Constitutional Court’s decision, the rulings of the judiciary, and the outcome of the presidential election must be accepted as political reality, and that a new path should now be pursued. Yet a question remains: does this choice truly align with the sentiments of the party’s core supporters?

Politics is not merely the technique of accepting institutional outcomes. It is also the process of understanding why supporters feel anger, why they raise doubts, and why they harbor distrust. When the leadership emphasizes realism—saying “let us acknowledge the results and move forward”—some within the base instead ask, “Why was there not a stronger fight?”

The crisis of a conservative party does not stem solely from defeat itself, but from the posture it adopts after defeat. If there is no clear message about the values the party intends to defend, where it is willing to compromise, and where it will draw firm lines, the erosion of its support base becomes inevitable.

A political party is not merely an electoral machine; it is a community of shared values. If it continues to rely on “strategic distancing” without clearly defining its identity, the resulting vacuum will be filled by other forces. In politics, a vacuum never lasts long.

With local elections approaching, a careful and sober assessment is needed as to whether distancing from Yoon will ultimately prove beneficial or harmful. Attempts to expand toward the political center without consolidating the core base have historically produced mixed outcomes. If a party seeks broader appeal without first solidifying its foundation, it risks losing both ends of the spectrum.

What is needed now is not emotional severance, but a clear and compelling vision. Without a philosophical declaration of what must be preserved and what must change, strategy alone will fail to persuade.

For conservative politics to regain strength, it must go beyond simply categorizing defeat as an accepted “result.” It must reflect seriously on why a significant portion of its supporters remain unconvinced. Political trust is not built solely through victory; it is built through sincerity, consistency, and transparent explanation.

The future of a political party depends not on the words of its leadership, but on how deeply those words resonate with the hearts of its supporters.

Some argue that the path forward requires more than parliamentary positioning. They contend that meaningful engagement with public concerns—and clarity on unresolved election controversies—must precede any renewed electoral effort. Without restoring confidence among its supporters, the upcoming June 3 local elections risk becoming symbolic rather than transformative.
