[이천석의 사설] 광기의 시대, '생각하는 인간'은 어디로 가고 있는가

생애의 황혼기에 접어든 이들에게 국가란 본래 평온한 안식처여야 한다. 그러나 작금의 대한민국은 노년의 평안을 허락하지 않는다. 이재명 정부 출범 이후 우리 사회는 유례없는 혼돈의 소용돌이 속으로 빨려 들어가고 있다. 경제는 펀더멘털을 무시한 채 주식시장의 기괴한 급등이라는 '착시 현상'에 취해 있고, 그 이면에서는 민주주의의 근간인 입법과 사법 행정이 독재적 전체주의의 망령에 잠식당하고 있다.

1. 경제적 비정상과 전체주의의 결합

시장은 정직해야 한다. 그러나 현재의 경제 상황은 논리적 설명이 불가능한 비정상적 폭주를 거듭하고 있다. 이는 건강한 성장의 결과가 아니라, 정치적 목적에 의해 왜곡된 부양책과 대중 영합주의가 만들어낸 '신기루'에 가깝다. 더욱 우려스러운 것은 이러한 경제적 비정상을 틈타 권력이 입법과 사법의 영역을 전방위적으로 장악하고 있다는 점이다. 견제와 균형은 사라졌고, 오직 '일사불란함'만을 강요하는 전체주의적 행보가 개혁이라는 이름으로 포장되어 집행되고 있다.

2. '생각하는 존재'의 상실과 대중의 가축화

가장 비극적인 지점은 이러한 시대적 역행에도 불구하고, 우리 사회가 비정상적인 침묵에 빠져들고 있다는 사실이다. 인간은 본래 사유하고 저항하는 존재다. 그러나 당장의 말초적인 경제적 이득이나 권력의 서슬에 눌려, 마땅히 분노해야 할 일에 눈을 감고 귀를 막는 이들이 속출하고 있다.

비판적 이성을 포기한 채 그저 주어진 환경에 순응하며 사는 삶을 과연 인간다운 삶이라 할 수 있는가. 주위를 둘러보면 불의를 보고도 '나만 아니면 된다'는 식의 무관심으로 일관하는 이들이 넘쳐난다. 이는 스스로를 사유하는 인간에서 '사육되는 대중'으로 격하시키는 처사나 다름없다.

3. 노병(老兵)의 고뇌, 그리고 시대의 책무

65세라는 나이는 세상을 관조할 나이이지, 다시금 투사가 되어야 할 나이는 아니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 "조용히 여생을 보내고 싶다"는 소박한 소망마저 사치가 되어버린 현실은 통탄스럽다. 무관심의 유혹은 달콤하지만, 그 결과는 참혹한 노예의 길임을 우리는 역사를 통해 알고 있다.

"지옥의 가장 뜨거운 곳은 도덕적 위기의 시대에 중립을 지킨 자들을 위해 예약되어 있다"는 단테의 일갈은 오늘날 우리를 향한 경고다.

결언

비정상이 정상을 압도하고, 사유하는 이성이 전체주의의 군화에 짓밟히는 시대다. 비록 주위에 무관심한 이들이 많아 슬픈 현실일지라도, 깨어 있는 소수의 비판적 목소리만이 이 거대한 침몰을 막을 수 있는 마지막 보루다. 우리는 '개 돼지'로 살기를 거부하고, 끝까지 인간으로서 사유하며 이 광기 어린 시대를 매섭게 질타해야 한다. 그것이 이 시대를 살아가는 어른의 마지막 자존심이자 책무다.

For those in the twilight of their lives, a nation should be a sanctuary of peace. However, present-day South Korea denies its elders such tranquility. Since the inauguration of the Lee Jae-myung administration, society has been sucked into a vortex of unprecedented chaos. The economy is intoxicated by a "mirage" of abnormal stock market surges that ignore fundamentals, while behind the scenes, the very foundations of democracy—the legislative and judicial branches—are being eroded by the specter of dictatorial totalitarianism.

1. The Union of Economic Anomaly and Totalitarianism

Markets must be honest. Yet, the current economic situation is spiraling out of control in a way that defies logical explanation. This is not the result of healthy growth, but rather a facade created by politically distorted stimulus packages and populism. Even more alarming is how the power elite is using this economic anomaly as a smokescreen to seize control over the legislative and judicial systems. Checks and balances have vanished, and a totalitarian drive for "uniformity" is being executed under the guise of reform.

2. The Loss of the "Thinking Being" and the Domestication of the Masses

The most tragic aspect of this regression is the abnormal silence falling over society. Humans are, by nature, beings that reason and resist. However, we see a surge of people closing their eyes and ears to injustice, swayed by fleeting economic gains or intimidated by the weight of power.

Can a life spent in mindless conformity, merely adapting to the environment, truly be called human? It is heartbreaking to see so many around us remaining indifferent, living by the mantra "as long as it's not me." This is no different from degrading oneself from a "thinking human" to "domesticated livestock."

The age of 65 should be a time to contemplate the world, not to become a soldier once again. It is deplorable that even the modest wish to "spend one's remaining years quietly" has become a luxury. The temptation of indifference is sweet, but history teaches us that its end is the path to slavery.
